Tooth Extractions
Our doctors perform tooth extractions in-office. If you or a family member is experiencing tooth pain, has a cracked or broken tooth, or may need an extraction, please give Dentistry At Somerset a call for a consultation.
Why Would I Need A Tooth Extracted?
Tooth extraction is the removal of the tooth from its socket in the bone. There are several reasons we may recommend you extract a tooth. The most common is that a tooth is broken or damaged by decay but can’t be fixed with only a filling or a crown. Other reasons could include a patient having extra teeth that block others from coming in, a patient having baby teeth that don’t fall out in time for permanent teeth to take their place, or where space is needed for braces, and more.
If your dentist has suggested a tooth extraction for any reason, Dentistry At Somerset’s doctors are capable of performing the tooth extraction in-office to make the procedure as efficient and comfortable as possible and we’re happy to answer any questions you may have along the way.
AMES, IA TOOTH EXTRACTIONS – DENTISTRY AT SOMERSET
Two Types of Tooth Extractions
Both types of extractions share the same pain relief methods, detailed below.
1
Simple Extraction – Procedure: If you are receiving a simple extraction, this means that the tooth that is being extracted can be seen in the mouth. Our skilled dentists will loosen the tooth with an instrument called an elevator. The dentist will then remove the tooth with forceps.
2
Surgical Extraction – Procedure: A dentist will suggest performing a surgical extraction if the tooth has been broken at the gum line or has yet to break through the gum and come into the mouth. The dentist or oral surgeon will make a small incision into the gym in order to remove the tooth. This extraction is most commonly seen while extracting wisdom teeth.
Pain Relief Methods For Tooth Extractions
Pain Relief During Procedure – A local anesthetic will be provided during the procedure. We also offer laughing gas as an option during the procedure.
Pain Relief After Procedure – Using ice packs on jaws to reduce swelling and eating soft and cool foods for a few days after the procedure are common recommendations to lessen pain and prevent infection. Also gently rinsing with warm saltwater for a few days afterward and avoiding smoking will prevent infection.
